Mobile App Design
In 2010, a friend of mine approached me about designing a series of icons for his mobile app project, “The Spacing Effect”. The flashcard-based language-learning app would be released on iOS (both iPad and iPhone/iPod) and Android. With an extremely tight budget, I had to limit my initial design iterations to just a couple of good options that could easily be replicated and optimized for nine+ different languages, in Free, Paid, and Audio editions.
We ended up choosing a simple design that showcases the two most important ideas of the app: The Language, and The Notecard. In addition to the high-resolution textured cards and flags, I built everything on a Photoshop template system that allowed me to quickly produce all of the various graphic sizes and formats, including smaller icon versions with a slightly altered design, optimized for size and clarity, in a minimal amount of time.
